It has been a busy summer with new partnerships in the AV Channel with CIRA and a great new Canadian Touchstone Distributor SF Marketing. Now we've up and moved our headquarters and distribution facility to a larger space in Milpitas, CA. For me, nothing beats the Pride of the Yankees, with Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig (and an aging Babe Ruth playing himself). Gehrig/Cooper’s speech made in July 4th to a packed Yankee Stadium , as he stood there dying, having just played his last game after that amazing Iron Man streak, and proclaiming to all the “ …he is the luckiest man on the face of the earth” gets me every time. The mix of baseball, summer, the greatness of Gehrig as a man and a player, the grainy black & white, the majesty of Yankee Stadium…that is the best.

On the beach in Santa Cruz, on a $20 bet, I ran butt-naked into the ocean, cut the bottom of my foot on a broken bottle and had to get 5 stitches...

Best July 4th memory is securing a choice lawn position right in front of the Hatch Shell at the Esplanade on the shores of the Charles River in Boston, 1976, the Bi-Centennial celebration, the Boston Pops playing the 1812 overture complete with live cannons firing, a massive fireworks display going off on a barge on the Charles, an estimated ¾ to a million people lining the shores and hanging from buildings, and Theresa, me, a bunch of our friends drinking Old Overholt Rye whiskey, getting very crazy driving our motorcycles home through the crowds. Being 23 was a good time.

So Happy Birthday America! We hope everyone has a great 4th of July!

Touchstone is going to the County Fair!

Touchstone is taking part in a great Summertime tradition - The County Fair! Maculo Enterprises is taking Touchstone on the road. We'll be at to two upcoming big Fairs in Northern and Southern California.

The first fair is the Alameda County Fair, which is held at the Fair Grounds in Pleasanton, CA in Touchstone's Backyard. The Fair runs from 7/1-7/17. Touchstone TV Lift Cabinets will be featured in the Young California Building in Booth 83 and 84. While you're there, be sure to check out some of the funnier attractions including Wiener Dog Racing

The second fair is the Orange County Fair, which is held in Anaheim, CA. The show runs from 7/10-8/10. So far, we're looking to enjoy a little old school Demolition Derby along with Rick Springfield of 1980's music fame singing Jessie's Girl.

Safety First

As any parent will tell you, the safety and security of their children is of primary importance. We all take great care to make sure our children are protected and we work hard to create a home environment that is free of dangerous hazards that could do harm to our youngsters.

So, imagine my surprise and concern when Brian Williams came on the NBC Nightly news Tuesday night May 12^th to report that “falling flat-screen TVs a growing threat for kids.” Not falling prices, falling flat screen TVs. Yikes! Moving beyond some of the alarmist tone of the report (click here for a full report with a video ) the key takeaway for me was the fact that 47% of the reported home furniture-related injuries were due to televisions, and principally due to the “ever-bigger flat-panel televisions that Americans have brought into their homes…along with the entertainment centers and less-stable stands to hold them.”

The article went on to say that the American love affair with flat-panel displays (a love affair we heartily endorse by the way) is resulting in many homes “precariously balancing” their new prized possessions on lightweight, unstable stands or hanging it from wall brackets that are often inexpertly installed by home DIY-ers.

The news report and article was a reminder to me of why we at Touchstone developed and created the TV Lift cabinet product. Certainly the wow factor- “Now you see it, Now you don’t”- was an initial influence on our decision to commit our business to this product. However, we early on recognized that the intrinsic value that a Touchstone TV Lift cabinet delivers to the home consumer was in securely hiding the TV from view when not in use, and safely positioning the TV in a stable cabinet, out of harm’s way. Touchstone is home to some die hard basketball fans as well as some rookies to picking a NCAA bracket. There is no consensus of the winner with arguments made for UNC, UConn, Pittsburgh, and Louisville to cut down the nets when all is said and done.

March Madness took on a different connotation in my own household growing up. The month always meant crowding around the “Big TV” hidden down in our basement and running back and forth to the upstairs where my mother laid out the ultimate spread of food for parties with friends and family in the “nice living room”. It would have been so wonderful to have had a Touchstone TV Lift Cabinet back then. Shameless plug aside, I am Serious. It truly is the best of both worlds. You can gather to entertain, watch TV on your flat screen, and root for your favorite team. When the game is over, at the touch of a button, you can lower that TV right back into the cabinet. Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (with apologies to Hunter S. Thompson)

February Furniture Market is over now, and we had a productive week in Vegas showing our new products and meeting with our reps & dealers. Our new Floor Model Program was a big hit with the dealers as it is a no risk way for retailers to get into the TV lift category. Our SimplySell program - dealers "simply sell" and Touchstone does the rest - is a paradigm-shifting way of doing business that we believe will energize the moribund furniture industry.

Went to a panel discussion on trends in Home Entertainment furniture sponsored by Women in the Home Industries Today (WITHIT, www.withit.org) which was very enlightening. A show of hands in the audience reinforced what we in the TV lift cabinet business already know- the overwhelming majority of people want the TV hidden from view when not in use - especially if the flat screen TV is in the bedroom or living room. Former Cafepress.com COO Jeff Sheahan has joined Touchstone Home Products Inc. as Chief Executive Officer.

Sheahan has over 25 years of senior management experience in the US and Europe leading early, mid-stage, and mature private and public companies selling a wide-range of products and services to consumers and businesses. Born in Boston, MA, Sheahan began his career running direct marketing catalog-based businesses in the New England area, and went on from there to leading companies that utilized a multi-channel approach to growing their business, leveraging online communities and marketing, Web 2.0 dynamics, traditional Direct Marketing, and outbound sales and service.

Earlier in Sheahan’s career, he was President of Microwarehouse Europe, leading that direct marketing company through a period of significant international profitable growth.

Sheahan lives in San Ramon, CA where he enjoys taking advantage of Northern California’s natural beauty to hike, bike, explore, and dine out al fresco.
